... Photographic artist... holding the President's medal. This photographic portrait ...This photographic portrait was commissioned to commemorate Dr Genevieve Goulding's term as President of ANZCA. Traditionally, ANZCA presidents have been commemorated at the end of their term with a commissioned oil painting. In 2015, the decision was made by ANZCA Council to change to photographic portraiture. This meant the existing oil paintings of College presidents became a formed collection which will not be added to and this portrait is the first to be commissioned in the new medium. It was unveiled at the ANZCA Council dinner on 22 July 2016. Photograph - print, B. Ireland, The Eureka Stockade, c1890 -1900
This image was taken for the purposes of illustrating Jack Harvey's book 'Eureka rediscovered'. According to the State Library of Victoria catalogue the work is an over-painted photographic print, photographed by an unknown photographer from the painted canvas by Izett Watson and Thaddeus Welch, which was exhibited as a painted cyclorama in the 'Battle of Waterloo' Cyclorama building, Fitzroy, ca. 1891. This is based on the evidence that the pulleys and brick wall are discernible at the top edge of the image which B. Ireland has not over-painted. This artist may by Beryl Ireland, who was a miniaturist and studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in the 1870s. Beryl Ireland was the niece of Richard Davies Ireland (1816-1877), the lawyer for the Eureka defendants in 1855. Information provided by Dr. Mimi Colligan, 2002. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 1859
Louis Chevalier, brother of popular artist Nicholas Chevalier, opened a sawmill in Beechworth near Spring Creek in Newtown in 1853. This facilitated a boom in building in the town, as materials were much more available than they had been previously. A second sawmill was opened in the town in 1856. Louis Chevalier served on the Beechworth Council as a representative of Newtown between 1858 and 1860. As this photograph is taken in 1859, the mill would have been operating as a sawmill at the time this photograph was taken. Louis Chevalier’s mill stopped sawing wood and began milling flour at some point between 1860 and 1862. At this time, the Oven’s district was almost self-sufficient, producing considerable quantities of grain, dairy, fodder and meat. Unfortunately, the region experienced poor agricultural yields in the 1880s and 1890s, which lead to the closure of the Beechworth Flour Mills in the 1880s. This photograph depicts the first sawmill in Beechworth, which was responsible for making the materials available for other early buildings in the town. The mill race and wheel are also clearly depicted, which may shed light onto how mill wheels of this era and place were constructedBlack and white rectangular photograph printed on matte photographic paper mounted on boardReverse: 3146 / 1997.2654 / Louis Chevalier's Flour Mill on / the Newtown Falls before the / Bridge / Est 1853 / this photo 1859 / 84-229-1 / Burke Museum Beechworth / Page 41 / 81 % / (Illegible) / (Illegible) 14 / chevalier, louis chevalier, newtown, mill, grain mill, sawmill, flour mill, 1850s beechworth, beechworth council, farming and agriculture, victorian agricultural history, spring creek, buildings, industry, forestry, wood, timber -

Various PartiesReference, Research, InformationKHS OrderSubject file relating to the Australian artist A M E Bale who lived at 83 Walpole Street, Kew (Vic). The file contains a great deal of photocopied biographical information, as well as some newspaper articles/clippings. In 1981, the Kew Historical Society applied for the house to be registered by the Historic Buildings Preservation Council of Victoria. Accompanying the application was a citation by Timothy Hubbard (1981). A reply by the Boyce Pizzey, from the Council (1 May 1981) indicated that the building was of “insufficient architectural or historic importance” to warrant registration. The letter also indicated that the current owners had been requested to provide “a professional photographic record of the house and contents and submit these, along with all specifications and drawings, to the Latrobe Library, Melbourne”. The file includes an anonymous handwritten record of the contents of the house, which were sold at auction in 1981.artists - kew (vic.), a m e bale, walpole street - kew (vic.)artists - kew (vic.), a m e bale, walpole street - kew (vic.) -

Photograph of John Pascoe Fawkner, 1857
This photograph of John Pascoe Fawkner was commissioned by artist William Strutt in 1857. In 1907 Strutt gave the photograph to Victoria's London agent, Mr. Lake, to be presented to the Victorian Parliamentary Library. In a letter to Mr. Lake now in the library's archives, Strutt describes how he had planned to make use of the photograph in his artistic practice, and when finished with it, had promised to give the photograph to the Victorian Parliamentary Librarian Charles Ridgway (c.1801-1865). "That time then has come, late it is true, but alas Mr. Ridgeway [sic] is dead, so is Fawkner, but the old patriot will ever live in this portrait".Framed ambrotype portrait photograph of John Pascoe Fawkner seated and wearing a smoking cap. Note from William Strutt adhered verso. The ambrotype is a positive photographic image on a glass plate mounted inside a glazed frame with a gold-coloured inner-frame/preserver (possibly celluloid) and black velvet-covered backing board. Photograph: Sue FORD (b.1943-d.2009), Sue Ford, Neil Douglas Research 1964, Photographed 1964; printed 2015
Sue Ford (1943-2009) was an important practitioner in the wave of 1970's Australian feminist photographers. Ford regularly took intimate and candid pictures of artist friends, such as 'Neil Douglas Research 1964', documenting a time in Eltham when Montsalvat and Dunmoochin played an important part in the early attraction of artists to the Nillumbik area. Artist, conservationist and activist Neil Douglas (1911-2003) is best known for his garden at the Bend of Islands, Kangaroo Ground where he formed a co-operative for like-minded people who wished to live in harmony with the bush and wildlife. His love of nature and the beauty and fragility of the bush are constant themes that often run parallel in his ceramic works and paintings.Sue Ford and Neil Douglas were artists of national significance who both lived in the local Nillumbik area in the mid to late twentieth century. They were part of a community of artists integral in forging a dynamic artistic spirit, heavily inspired by the region's landscape and its people. Painting - Oil on Canvas, Shane Jones, 'Untitled #75' by Shane Jones, 2000
Shane JONES (1955- ) Born Melbourne Shane Jones is a graduate with a Masters in Fine Arts from Monash University, He practices art 'en plein air' and in the studio. Shane Jones' realist works feature the trompe l’oeil (trick the eye) tradition and he is considered one of Australia's foremost artists in this technique. The hyper-realist style of art creates an illusion that the objects depicted are the real thing while not being photographic. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.A painting of a long white cloth being held by a white and a black hand. Photograph - Alma and Silvia Figuerola, D'Estaville, The Age, c.1965
The Melbourne artist Alma Agnes Marion Figuerola, was the daughter of Juan Pedro Narciso Figuerola (1869-1919) and Alice Lucinda Walker Hanson (1889-1969). Each of their three daughters grew up to be involved in the arts: Alma as a painter; Carmen Irene (1906-1993) as a short story writer, poet and teacher of dancing; and Sylvia (also Silvia) Lyla Alice (1911-1992) as a composer and cellist. The first art lessons Alma Figuerola received were with Oscar Binder. Later she attended the art school established by the Melbourne 'tonalist' [Duncan] Max Meldrum (1875-1955). She graduated from his school in 1920, participating in her first group exhibition in the same year. Solo exhibitions of her work were to be held in 1933 at the Meldrum Gallery in Elizabeth Street, in 1937 and 1945 at the Athenaeum Gallery at 188 Collins Street, and in 1951 at Georges Gallery in Collins Street. Throughout her extensive career she participated in group exhibitions, usually with artists of the Meldrum School, and as a member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters, of which she was invited to become an associate in 1935. In 1953, her portrait of Professor ES Hills was entered in the Archibald Prize Competition of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. A resident of Kew from the 1930s - 51 Studley Park Road, often with her mother, her sister Carmen, or both - from c.1942 until her death she lived at 'D’Estaville', 7 Barry Street.
